The name Ar-Rahman is used the most after the name, “Allah” and is derived from the word, Rahmah.
Allah created this universe to have rahmah on people and not to punish people. This universe is not created to punish people. What would Allah get by punishing you? At the beginning of the Quran, Allah is telling us that the purpose of creating this universe is not his “athab” or “jahanem” not punishment, it is only and solely his Rahma and his mercy. Allah starts the book with “The Lord of the Universe” and “A Lord who is very merciful”, this shows the point that everything on this universe was created as a rahma of Allah. He is Lord and such a lord who always deals with rahma. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) saying, “When Allah created the creatures, He wrote in the Book, which is with Him over His Throne: `Verily, My Mercy prevailed over My Wrath”. But Allah is not a “push over”, If a person who sees something wrong and does not get upset, something is wrong with this person, this is not mercy, because for a person to not get upset, this is not natural. So why would we expect for Allah to let people do things against him and defame him and do nothing? But the beauty of it is that, Allah deals with us with his rahmah although we do things that get Allah upset. We pray for Allah to forgive us and Subhnallah, 60 years of sins is forgiven, look at Allah’s rahmah. On the Day of Judgment when Allah would have finished all the judgment, Allah will make this announcement that his mercy is ahead of his anger and Allah will show the world, one sign of his rahma and will take out one or two people from jahanem and will take them into jannah, these people always sinned but believed in Allah and Muhammad (salla hu alyhi wassalam) but never did anything good in their life. Allah loves human beings more than a mother loves their child.
Abu Hurayrah (ra) related that the Messenger of ALLAH (saw) said: “ALLAH created mercy in one hundred parts and sent down to earth only one part. Because of this one part there is mutual love amongst creation, so much so that an animal will lift up its hoof from its young one, fearing that it might harm it. ALLAH has reserved the remaining ninety-nine parts of this mercy to favour His believing servants on the Day of Judgment.
There is a surah in Quran, Ar-Rahman, which speaks of the Rahma of Allah, again and again, Allah says, “Which of my blessings are you going to deny?” Allah’s rahma is for everyone, All of Allah’s creation. And Allah’s mercy is Ar-Raheem, full mercy. And only Allah can be Ar-Rahman, because no human being is merciful to ALL. Today people believe that Rahma means money, food, health, etc. but this is not the case, the greatest rahma of Allah is this deen. Allah has given us this deen, which is ALL Rahma. If people are looking for peace, mercy, justice, pleasantness, a good life, if they would follow the deen of Allah, they would find it. Look how Allah explains it, “The peace of mind comes through the remembrance of Allah”. The further away people go from the remembrance of Allah, the more disturbed their life is. No matter how much dunya you have, this will NEVER give you a peace of mind. “Whoever will turn away from my remembrance, will have a very difficult life” and on the Day of Judgment we will raise him as blind. This is a great sign of the Rahma of Allah on us.
And Allah’s rahma encompasses everything!
Shaitan asked, “How can I go to Jahanem if Allah’s rahma encompasses everything?” He said, “You are a kafir”, Shaitan says, “Are you limiting Allah’s rahma to believers”. This is puzzling, but if you are not accepting Allah’s rahma, you are rejecting it. It is as if I passed around a basket of cookies and you do not accept it, this is your doing, not mine. So, Allah’s rahma is open to everyone ad we choose whether to accept this rahma.
In Surah Mariam, verse 75, Allah says.
Whosoever is and was (emphasis) is immersed in being lost, they are so lost they can not even see anymore. Then says “falyamdudlahu”, the base of the word refers to extending something, like if you had a dog on a leash and then you press the button to extend the leash or flying a kite and decided to give it a little give, you give it a little bit more leeway. The “fal” at the beginning means that it should be given, that it is appropriate to give a little bit of an extension. Who is to give this give? Ar-Rahman, Allah, It is appropriate, befitting, and the habit for Allah to give this type of person drowning in ignorance an extension and not some but much extension. But why? It is because Allah is Ar-Rahman, and Allah does not give up on people. Pharaoh was a bad person but even in his situation, Allah sent him sign after sign, mercy after mercy, time and time again, even after Pharaoh turned on his word. Abu Sufuyan accepted Islam 20 years AFTER the dawah started and he LED the army against the Muslims multiple times and at the end of all of it, Allah gave him Iman. And this is the nature of Allah, Ar-Rahman, Allah keeps giving extension and keeps giving opportunities.
